What Is an Attar?

An attar (also spelled ittar) is an essential oil derived from botanical sources. Most commonly, these oils are extracted via hydro-distillation or steam distillation.

Attar can also be expressed by chemical means, but generally, natural perfumes which qualify as attars are distilled with water — not solvents.

The oils are typically distilled into a wood base such as sandalwood oil, then aged. The aging period can last from one to ten years, depending on the botanicals used and the fragrance profile desired.

How Traditional Attars Are Made

Technically, attars are distillates of:

  • Flowers
  • Herbs
  • Spices
  • Other natural materials (such as baked soil)

These ingredients are distilled over sandalwood oil or liquid paraffin using a hydro-distillation technique with a deg (traditional vaporizer).

This slow, careful process creates a perfume oil that differs from synthetic perfume oils in viscosity, color, and aroma — which is exactly what sets quality attars apart from mass-produced fragrances.

Traditional and Cultural Uses of Attars

Attars are widely used in:

  • Muslim communities – for personal grooming, prayer, and spiritual practices
  • Indian Subcontinent & Arabia – as daily perfume and traditional medicine
  • Greek medicine – historically used to treat numerous health disorders

Although attars are mostly used as a perfume, they are also valued for medicinal and aphrodisiac purposes.

Warm vs. Cool Attars – Choose by Season

Attars are traditionally classified based on their perceived effect on the body.

Warm Attars (Best for Winter)

Warm attars are believed to increase body temperature. Ideal for colder months.

  • Musk attar – Deep, animalic, sensual
  • Amber attar – Rich, resinous, comforting
  • Kesar (saffron) attar – Spicy, floral, luxurious

Cool Attars (Best for Summer)

Cool attars provide a perceived cooling effect. Perfect for hot climates.

  • Rose attar – Timeless, floral, uplifting
  • Jasmine attar – Sweet, exotic, romantic
  • Khus (vetiver) attar – Earthy, grassy, grounding
  • Kewra attar – Intensely floral, reminiscent of pandanus
  • Mogra (Indian jasmine) attar – Delicate, fresh, intoxicating

Certificate of Analysis (COA) – Total Transparency

Where applicable, we publish the Certificate of Analysis (COA) in the description section of every attar we sell.

⚠️ Important: The COA changes from product to product and may change each time we restock an attar. Kindly check the COA for any changes each time you reorder.

We believe in radical transparency — not just pretty packaging.

What Makes Our Attars Different

As attars are natural perfumes, they may differ slightly from synthetic perfume oils of the same name. They may have different:

  • Viscosity (thickness)
  • Color (natural variation)
  • Aroma (richer, more complex)

This is what sets our attars above the rest. No shortcuts. No synthetic masquerading as natural. Just honest, beautiful fragrance.
